(September 26th 2008) Since 1977 Nikon has been organising the Small World Competition for the best microscopic images. Now, the company is inviting the public to rate their own favourites among this year's top entries. By Karin Hollricher

If you open the website http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/vote-launch.php you will be spoilt for choice: 115 wonderful pictures are presented, awaiting your rating. The beauty of the extremely small organisms and molecules is compelling. It looks as if the photographers - professionals as well as scientists - have used virtually every available imaging technique.

Will you prefer opalescent details from a soap film over a crystallized mixture of resorcinal, methylene blue, and sulphur? Or how many stars would you assign to the images of Diptera Atherix ibis larvae, or to the embryonated eggs of Oryzias latipes (Japanese rice fish) on Vesicularia dubyana (Java moss)? Click and marvel at the beauty of the microscopically small. Currently heading the voters' list for the Small World Competition are images of a nematode and a snowflake.

The official judging for the 34th Annual Small World Photomicrography Competition has already closed with the winners to be announced on October 15th. But the public vote is still open.
